Joining virtually at a program at the National Press Club on Sunday (17 August), Tarique Rahman addressed the discussion titled “The Role and Responsibilities of Poets and Writers in the Transition to Democracy”, organized by the National Poetry Council. In his remarks, he spoke about democracy, fundamental rights, and accountability in governance.
“BNP aspires for a Bangladesh that never becomes a breeding ground for extremism or fundamentalism. For that, everyone must raise their voice,” he said.
Tarique Rahman further noted that the true owners of the country are its citizens. Democracy and freedom of speech can only be established by safeguarding people’s right to vote. He therefore urged for an inclusive and fair election and called upon all to unite for this cause.
He added, “Establishing accountability in governance is the demand of time, and it can only be achieved by ensuring people’s voting rights.”
Warning against the resurgence of authoritarian rule, he emphasized the need for national unity to protect the sovereignty of the country. “We must work collectively to safeguard the nation, and the voice of unity must echo across the country,” he concluded
