A new request has been made by Bangladesh for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and it is currently under review, according to India. Sheikh Hasina, sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal, has been residing in India since August 2024.
On Wednesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randeep Joyswal stated at a press briefing that a fresh request has been made by Bangladesh for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, and it is presently being considered. He noted that this is the first time India has officially acknowledged the request for the return of the former prime minister, who was sentenced to death by the International Criminal Tribunal.
Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 2024. Earlier, in July of last year, she had left Bangladesh for India amid widespread student and public protests. Although Bangladesh had sent letters requesting her return on two previous occasions, this is the first time Delhi has publicly confirmed the matter.
