Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed has said that when the effectiveness of the judiciary stalls, the voice of the Constitution becomes silent, pushing the state system and democracy into deep crisis. He expressed this opinion in a written statement delivered at the ‘Bay of Bengal Conversation’ held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (22 November).
He stated that during times of global unrest, the judiciary faces its toughest tests. The development of this institution is not merely about structural reform—it is a struggle to uphold justice, rights, and democracy. Citing the example of the July Revolution, he said that at that time the people’s expectations were centered on transparency, accountability, and active public engagement.
At the event, Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain said that the Rohingya crisis poses a major security challenge for the entire region. Enhancing regional cooperation is essential for a sustainable solution. He further mentioned that prioritizing national interests, the government is strengthening relations with countries in the Bay of Bengal region and beyond.
