Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, has claimed that the Awami League is not a political party but rather a factional network built around power and influence over many years. He alleged that they undermined the spirit of the Constitution while standing on the floor of Parliament.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists at the National Shaheed Minar on Saturday (22 November).
Salahuddin said that although the political chapter of the Awami League has ended on Bangladeshi soil, its ultimate downfall occurred outside the country. He warned that if the struggle to restore democracy is obstructed, there could be a renewed rise of authoritarian rule.
He emphasized that no political party’s activities should be hindered in a democratic environment. A political culture must be built that aligns with the dreams and struggles of the martyrs of July. He asserted that the verdict against Sheikh Hasina will be implemented, considering the expectations of the people and international standards.
Referring to the student uprising, he said it was not the result of a few days’ agitation but of long-term preparation. He added that individuals or groups attempting to establish unilateral dominance in the name of the “Spirit of ’24” should learn from the past.
He also questioned how those who historically stood against the aspirations of ’47 and ’71 could fulfill the people’s expectations. Addressing Jamaat, he urged them not to spread misleading information that could create confusion among the public.
