BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed the absence of elections and an elected government for the deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, saying that criminals are exploiting the political vacuum.
A government elected by the people is naturally more accountable and stronger. Without such a government, lawlessness thrives,” Fakhrul said on Saturday while speaking at a views-exchange meeting with the families of the martyrs of the July mass uprising.
He urged the interim authorities to carry out urgent political reforms and pave the way for a fair and inclusive election to restore democracy. “We want to change the structure and system of the state. There is no alternative to democracy, and the first step toward that is holding credible elections,” he added.
Fakhrul warned that the people of the country will hold the current administration responsible if the ongoing instability persists. “If the government fails to act, the nation will not forgive it for creating such a crisis at a time when we are seeking a return to democracy.”
The BNP leader also demanded a prompt and transparent investigation into recent killings, including the murder of a scrap trader in Old Dhaka, calling for the immediate identification and prosecution of the culprits.
“I urge the government to investigate these incidents urgently and bring the actual perpetrators to justice,” he said.
Addressing BNP activists and supporters, Fakhrul appealed for patience and discipline during their political struggle. “We must remain calm. We must ensure that none of us commit any unlawful acts. BNP has always upheld justice and the rule of law—and will continue to do so.”
The event, organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, marked the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising and honoured the families of those who were killed during the protests. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman joined the programme virtually from London.
Fakhrul encouraged Chhatra Dal to publish a book documenting the sacrifices of its martyred members and promised state recognition and support for their families if BNP returns to power.
He also called on the interim government to ensure adequate compensation for the victims’ families and proper rehabilitation for the injured.
