BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the party's main objective is to ensure the next national election is held by February 2026, as discussed in a recent meeting in London between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
He told a protest rally at the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan, “There must be no exception to this.”
The rally, organised by BNP’s Dhaka North and South units along with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, was held to protest alleged propaganda against Tarique Rahman and to demand justice for recent killings, including the one in front of Mitford Hospital.
Fakhrul accused some political groups of trying to mislead the nation, saying, “This is not a new conspiracy. Every time the people of Bangladesh rise to stand tall, these forces try to push the country into chaos.”
He said defamatory language was used against Tarique Rahman and shameful slogans were raised to intimidate the BNP, but added, “This party has always risen from the ashes like a phoenix.”
Calling for calm, he told party members, “They want us to react emotionally and walk into their trap. But we must remain calm.”
BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas also addressed the rally. He claimed the Mitford murder victim was a BNP supporter and alleged that the incident was staged to defame the party. “There was no movement or struggle in the video. It looked like it was pre-recorded to push a narrative—that BNP is to blame,” he said.
Abbas said, “The BNP is a popular party. It lives in the hearts of the people. No matter how much propaganda is spread, this party cannot be erased.”
Other BNP leaders including Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Aminul Haque and Rafiqul Alam Majnu also spoke at the rally, which ended with a procession to the National Press Club. Earlier, Chhatra Dal brought out a separate procession to Shahbagh. Both events disrupted traffic and saw heavy police presence.
