EC Removes Awami League’s ‘Boat’ Symbol from Website

Due to the suspension of its registration, the Election Commission (EC) has removed the boat symbol of the Bangladesh Awami League from its official website. According to relevant officials, the decision was implemented following instructions from higher authorities

On Wednesday morning (July 16), the Awami League's political symbol boat was no longer visible on the EC website. Although the party's name remains listed, the symbol next to it has been removed.

When asked about this, Md. Rafiqul Haque, System Manager at the EC Secretariat, said, "The symbol was removed as per the directive from higher authorities."

The previous night, Local Government Affairs Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan criticized the Election Commission in a Facebook post. He questioned the reappearance of the boat symbol on the EC website and expressed concern over the Commission's role in this matter.

It is worth noting that on August 5, 2024, after 15 years in power, the Awami League lost governance. On May 12 of this year, the government officially banned all political activities of the party and its affiliated organizations. In line with this decision, the EC suspended the party's registration, which is believed to be the reason for the removal of the symbol.

BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has expressed strong optimism about his party’s prospects in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. He shared his views with journalists on Thursday afternoon in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Tarique Rahman stated that if the election is held in a free, fair, and controversy-free manner, all political parties should accept the outcome. He described the day as significant and memorable for the country’s nearly 130 million voters.

Expressing satisfaction over voter participation, he said that if citizens are able to cast their votes peacefully and without obstruction, it would mark a genuine step forward for democracy.

Earlier in the morning at 9:40 am, he cast his vote at Gulshan Model School and College, accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and his daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman.

After voting, he reiterated his confidence in victory and said that if elected by the people, improving law and order would be a priority. Responding to a question, he added that active voter participation can thwart any conspiracy.

In this election, Tarique Rahman is contesting from the Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies.

False Claim of Jamaat Voting Early at Narayanganj-3 Polling Station

A video circulating on social media claims that Jamaat candidates were voting early at the Dhan Kunda School polling station in Ward 8 of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj-3 constituency.

Verification by The Descent shows that this claim is false. At the polling station, Presiding Officer Md. Bashirul Haq Bhuiyan was arranging election materials, and local BNP leaders posted the video to create controversy over these preparations.

Shahina Islam Chowdhury, Assistant Returning Officer in charge of Siddhirganj, stated, “Necessary preparations for the election were being carried out. No activities of any external political party took place. The presiding officer did not participate politically and remained on duty.”

Maulana Abdul Jabbar, Amir of Narayanganj Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami, also confirmed that allegations in the video regarding early voting are entirely false. The presiding officer was performing his duties as a headteacher.

In conclusion, the claim that Jamaat voted early in Narayanganj-3 is baseless.

At a checkpoint in Jhumur, Lakshmipur, law enforcement searched a vehicle used by Krishak Dal leader Badrul Alam Shyamal and recovered 15 lakh Taka. After verifying the documents, he was released along with the money.

Assistant Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Rezaul Haque said the recovered funds were reported to the judicial magistrate. Once the necessary documents were presented in court, the money was confirmed as election expenditure funds, and he was released without any conditions.

BNP candidate Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anni stated that the money was being carried for expenses at various polling centers. After verification of accounts and documents, his representative was also released.

Police confirmed that under court supervision, the funds were verified as legitimate, and he was allowed to go with the money.

Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman says the party works for the people, not personal or party interests, and bases its politics on religious values rather than using religion as a political tool.

Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman stated that the party’s politics are not driven by personal or party gain, but by public service. He emphasized that Jamaat does not use religion as a political instrument, but rather operates based on religious values. The remarks came after a meeting with a European Union delegation on Monday, December 8.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said the discussion covered political developments, election preparations, and the referendum. In response to EU delegates’ questions, he noted that holding the national election and the referendum on the same day could cause voter confusion and disorder. He mentioned that the EU delegation advised keeping the two elections separate and added that it is still possible to do so if the government desires.

Speaking on Jamaat’s vision if they come to power, Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, “We do not intend to run the government excluding any party. Our main priorities over the next five years will be restoring stability, reviving the economy, and establishing the rule of law.” He added that they aim to form a government with those who share their commitment to zero tolerance for corruption and ensuring equal justice for all.

On concerns about political stagnation due to Khaleda Zia’s health, he responded that health and illness are in God’s hands, but the country’s progress should not depend on an individual’s condition.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman also stressed the importance of holding the February elections on schedule, warning that even a minor delay could lead to national uncertainty. He called on all political parties to unite for the sake of the country.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that doctors are working tirelessly to ensure the recovery of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Speaking to reporters at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Monday (1 December), he stated that local and foreign specialists are jointly monitoring every aspect of her health and conducting her treatment.

Fakhrul added that prayers and support for Khaleda Zia’s quick recovery are coming from people across the country, including party leaders and supporters. He also mentioned that detailed medical updates will be shared at an appropriate time by Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.

On the same day, former coordinator of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Reza Kibria, formally joined the BNP at an event held at the office. Welcoming the new addition, Fakhrul said that a favorable environment for free elections has emerged and the government is preparing for elections in February. He added that if BNP is entrusted with state leadership, democracy will gain a stronger footing and the country’s economy will move forward with renewed momentum.

The National Citizens’ Party (NCP) will not engage in politics solely for power or seat-sharing, asserted party convener Nahid Islam, emphasizing that any discussions will be based strictly on ideological alignment. He also stated that NCP is preparing to field candidates for all 300 parliamentary seats independently.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (23 November) at Saeed Convention Center in Shahbagh, Dhaka, Nahid Islam said, “Many patriotic and young individuals are expected to enter parliament this time. However, a fair election environment has not yet been established.” He alleged that the administration is acting in favor of a particular party instead of maintaining neutrality and urged the government to organize a transparent and impartial election, reflecting the spirit of the July movement.

During the event, other party leaders also raised various electoral concerns. Chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary noted that although the party’s symbol is the Shapla Kali, the Election Commission has not yet provided the official design, hindering campaign efforts. He warned that if free and fair elections are obstructed, the interim government would have to face accountability.

Northern chief organizer Sargis Alam stated that the upcoming election will not be limited to traditional or established parties; NCP is actively forming committees in every ward across the country.

Senior Joint Secretary Dr. Tasnim Zara added that NCP aims to establish politics rooted in accountability. Moving away from family-dominated politics, the party is initiating a new political culture. He noted that many citizens seeking nomination had not previously considered entering politics. Interviews for prospective candidates will be conducted on Sunday and Monday.
