Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 for crimes against humanity committed during the student–mass uprisings of July–August last year.
The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, delivered the verdict on 17 November 2025. The other two members of the tribunal were Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The verdict stated that during the July–August uprising, “planned killings, arrests, torture, and large-scale repression using state forces against civilians” were proven to be crimes against humanity.
Reacting immediately after the verdict, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that the tribunal’s decision has set a precedent for establishing justice. He added that whether the punishment is sufficient given the scale of the crimes remains debatable; however, the verdict sends a strong message to future governments or leaders that they must not become autocratic or fascist.
He further noted that the ruling proves that no matter how powerful state authority may be, or how deeply fascism is entrenched, everyone must eventually face the court of law.
