He made these remarks on Wednesday (October 22) during meetings with leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizens Party (NCP) at the state guesthouse Jamuna. The discussions covered the implementation process of the July Charter, the issue of a referendum, and the roadmap for the trial of the July killings.
While speaking with Jamaat leaders, the Chief Adviser said, “You can rest assured about our neutrality. Various measures have already been taken to ensure a free, fair, and impartial election, and many more initiatives will be visible in the coming days.”
Jamaat’s Naib-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher stated, “A referendum should be held before the national election, as several issues mentioned in the July Charter are directly related to the polls. Holding both the election and referendum on the same day may risk prolonging the voting process.” He further added that his party has full confidence in the Chief Adviser to ensure administrative neutrality.
During the meeting, Dr. Muhammad Yunus urged the NCP to sign the July Charter, saying, “This Charter is a priceless national asset. Everyone’s participation is crucial. The Consensus Commission is already working on the implementation framework.”
NCP Convener Nahid Islam told the Chief Adviser, “We need assurance regarding the roadmap for the trial of the July killings and the implementation of the July Charter before the election. The government must take firm steps in this regard.” He also mentioned that the NCP has already written to the Consensus Commission to initiate discussions with relevant legal experts.
The Jamaat delegation was led by Naib-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Taher and included Secretary General Prof. Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General A.T.M. Masum, and Rafiqul Islam Khan.
The NCP delegation was led by Convener Nahid Islam and included Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, Senior Joint Convener Samanta Sharmin, and Joint Convener Khaled Saifullah.
