Reacting to the election roadmap unveiled by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, BNP Standing Committee members Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and Nazrul Islam Khan stated, “The Chief Adviser has kept his promise. We extend our thanks and welcome this timely and necessary announcement.”
They further remarked that the decision represents a significant stride towards resolving the ongoing political impasse and resonates with the expectations of the nation’s citizens.
In a televised address to the nation on Tuesday night (August 5), Dr. Yunus declared, “On behalf of the interim government, I will formally request the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to arrange national elections before the upcoming Ramadan, specifically by February 2026.”
He emphasized that since the July uprising, Bangladesh has made notable progress in restoring peace, stability, and economic momentum. “We have overcome substantial challenges. Now, our foremost duty is to ensure a participatory, credible, and free election that reflects the will of the people,” Dr. Yunus asserted.
The Chief Adviser also mentioned that the interim government is actively engaging with political parties and civil society stakeholders to foster an inclusive electoral environment.
Following the mass uprising in July, Dr. Yunus assumed leadership as the Chief Adviser. Since then, a key question has dominated the national discourse—when will the long-anticipated national elections be held? Dr. Yunus's latest announcement finally provides clarity on this issue, shifting the responsibility of election preparation onto the Election Commission.
Political analysts have lauded the announcement as a vital breakthrough. They noted that the BNP’s positive reception signifies a potential easing of political tensions and could contribute to greater national stability.
However, experts caution that the true test lies ahead. Ensuring a neutral, fair, and inclusive election will depend on the interim government’s forthcoming actions and the Election Commission's efficiency in organizing the polls.
It is pertinent to note that Ramadan in 2026 is expected to commence on February 17. Consequently, the Election Commission must consider organizing the elections by January or early February to avoid overlap with the fasting month.
